A native son was named Monday as the next bishop of the Diocese of New Ulm. The Vatican announced the appointment of the Rev. John M. LeVoir, 62, who will take the spot that was vacated when Archbishop John Nienstedt moved to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

LeVoir was born in Minneapolis and worked as a CPA before deciding to change careers in his late 20s. He has degrees from the University of St. Thomas, the University of Minnesota and the St. Paul Seminary.

He was ordained in 1981 and has spent his entire career in Minnesota. His current appointment is as pastor of the Church of St. Michael and the Church of St. Mary in Stillwater. The date for his installation in New Ulm has not been set.

I don’t recall ever meeting Bishop-designate LeVoir, although I have heard good things about him over the years. I checked with friends in the Twin Cities area and they confirmed that his appointment as bishop of the diocese of New Ulm is good news indeed. CMW
